Global plans for Sydney start-up

Sydney-based start-up Dresden Optics, which only sells one style of glasses, has secured AU$4 million in investment capital to take the brand global.

Founder Bruce Jeffreys says together with partner Jason McDermott, he started questioning how glasses could be more functional, versatile and dependable, and more sustainably made, with backups when needed. Together, they developed a system – a single frame style in multiple sizes – and began asked industrial design specialists to research face shapes and sizes and test frame styles via 3-D printed prototypes. Family, friends, neighbours and strangers were all roped in to model them and give feedback.

They say they soon realised that with interchangeable parts, frame sets could easily be customised: they now offer four frame sizes and four lengths of arm in a variety of colours and material, with interchangeable lenses cut in-store for flexibility, functionality and convenience.

The final detail, they say, was perfecting their pin design for snug fit and an easy pop in and out action, without any need for tools. It took a few goes, according to their company website, but they ended up with something pretty simple and smart - part of their mission to bring high-quality, sustainably-made prescription glasses to anyone in the world, no matter where they live and how much money they have.
