NZAO: Lock-down advice for NZ optometrists

March 24, 2020 Staff reporters

The following is an announcement by the New Zealand Association of Optometrists (NZAO) regarding the government’s Covid-19 Alert Level 4 announcement on Monday.

FROM THE NZAO COUNCIL

Without a doubt, these are challenging times. The Prime Minister has declared that we are at Alert Level 3 and will move to Alert Level 4 in 48 hours, ie. all non-essential businesses must shut down at approximately 12 noon on Wednesday 25th March 2020 for at least four weeks.

Our understanding is that optometry is NOT currently listed as an essential service, which means that in most instances NZAO recommends that optometry practices should make plans to close by 12 noon Wednesday 25th March, for at least four weeks.

If members wish to provide eye health services after 12 noon Wednesday 25th March (some members are currently in discussion with their local DHB eye clinics and medical centres to provide a community eye health services) then you must have appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) for yourself and staff, and appropriate infection control protocols for your patients.

Members should make every effort to allow patients to collect glasses and contact lenses etc. before Wednesday if possible and just like during normal close down over Christmas New Year, an after-hours contact number/email for triage.

We understand this a very confusing and potentially scary time for members and their communities, but if we all take a little time to breathe, a little time to be kinder to each other, then it will all work out better for everyone.

Stay safe and healthy - www.mentalhealth.org.uk/publications/looking-after-your-mental-health-during-coronavirus-outbreak - members may want to look at support options during this challenging time.

NZAO staff will work remotely and will endeavour to stay connected and keep you informed.
