SILMO 2018: Le Specs goes optical

After 40 years of making sunglasses, Sunshades is gearing up to launch Le Specs’ first optical range in January.

Select customers were offered a sneak peek at Silmo, with the full launch scheduled for Mido 2019. The optical range will be sold through optometrists, said designer Hamish Tame, and will significantly increase Sunshades’ optical offerings, which were recently boosted by the addition of Jono Hennessy to the family.

The new Le Specs optical range is price pointed and fashionable, everything the sunglasses are, said Tame, plus there will also be a new handmade sun collection for optometrists.

Sunshades has worked with Silmo d'Or Award winning designer Blake Kuwahara on the new optical collection to ensure it is not just fashionable, but all the optical detailing and fits were right. “It’s about making sure it’s all right; so it’s made for optometry and not just an optical version of our sunglasses.”

Tame would not be drawn on whether this means there will be other optical launches among Sunshades’ brands, which include Karen Walker, but with a knowing smile said optical is indeed a natural progression for the company.
