Clareon comes to Tauranga

September 5, 2018 Dr Andrew Thompson

Since the recent launch of Alcon’s world-first AutonoMe preloaded IOL delivery system with the Clareon intraocular lens (IOL) in Sydney, several ophthalmologists at Tauranga Eye Specialists have been accredited to use the device.

AutonoMe is a disposable, preloaded IOL delivery system. It has an automated CO²-powered delivery mechanism that allows single-handed, precise, consistent and controlled insertion of a preloaded IOL into the eye during cataract surgery. A responsive lever controls the speed of IOL delivery into the eye. AutonoMe has significant advantages over current insertion systems for preloaded IOLs, such as UltraSert and Monarch that require a two-handed technique and are less precise and controlled in their IOL delivery.

The Clareon IOL builds on the AcrySof platform but is manufactured from a new hydrophobic acrylic biomaterial that provides sharp, crisp vision with low-edge glare and unsurpassed optic clarity. The new optical polymer and enhanced manufacturing process result in reduced rates of posterior capsule opacification, less glare and less dysphotopsia for patients.

Experience from the Tauranga surgeons implanting the Clareon noted that it appears less stiff and the optic and haptics unfold faster than an AcrySof IOL. There was no tendency for the haptics to stick to the optic during unfolding of the Clareon making the entire process of IOL implantation faster than with an AcrySof IOL.
