Neutrogena Visibly Clear Light Therapy Acne Mask and Activator has been recalled due to fears it causes retinal damage.
Johnson & Johnson Pacific, in consultation with Australian Department of Health’s Therapeutic Goods Administration, has withdrawn the home-use device to treat facial acne.
Comprising an ‘acne face mask’ and detachable corded ‘activator’, it delivers a combination of red and blue light via light-emitting diodes. The hand-held system has been found to carry a risk of retinal damage in susceptible wearers, including those with retinitis pigmentosa, ocular albinism, other congenital retinal disorders.
The Department of Health release said, “…repeated exposure may cause varying degrees of retinal damage that could be irreversible and could accelerate peripheral vision impairment or loss.”
Other potential adverse effects include eye pain, eye discomfort, eye irritation, tearing, blinding, blurring of vision, seeing spots/flashes and other changes in vision (for example vision colour).
Consumers are advised to stop using this device immediately and contact Johnson & Johnson Pacific Consumer Care Centre on 1800 789 348 or visit the Neutrogena website to arrange return of the device and a refund and seek medical advice for any health concerns.
