Queenstown and Wanaka-based optometry practice Ocula, has added a third site to its brand with the acquisition of Christchurch-based Merivale Optical, previously owned by well-known optometrist and low vision champion John Veale. The move is a partnership between Ocula and Christchurch optometrist Roberta Mcllraith, with Veale staying on in a part-time role over the next year to oversee a smooth transition as he heads towards retirement.

Ross says the move is a natural step forward for the Ocula brand, which prides itself on providing both a boutique retail experience as well as a high standard of eyecare nationwide. “When Roberta approached us to establish a Christchurch boutique we were already considering expanding, so having an optometrist of such high calibre ready to collaborate was an offer we couldn’t pass up. Our search for a physical location revealed Merivale Optical, a clinic that aligns whole-heartedly with our brand values and business model. The credibility John Veale lends to the practice is significant, and we are excited to build on his vision.”

Mcllraith is also very pleased with the new partnership. “Our professional goals are so well aligned; the fit couldn’t be more perfect. I’m excited to see what the future will bring.”

The Merivale Optical store will be rebranded as Ocula over the next six months.
