Stars and their Eyes … David Bowie

The late David Bowie’s eyes appeared heterochromic, however he actually had anisocoria due to an injury. At age 14, Bowie and his life-long friend, artist George Underwood, were both seeking the affection of the same girl, which ended in a competitive scrap and Underwood punching Bowie in the eye with a ring-clad fist. The trauma to his left iris resulted in a fixed, dilated pupil. But this asymmetry added to Bowie’s mystique, with many describing his eyes as his most iconic feature. Years later, Underwood commented, “I’m proud to be his friend. And as for that accidental punch…Neither of us knew then that I’d actually done him favour.”
