Taking pride of place on Zeiss’ stand at RANZCO in Brisbane was the company’s new Quatera 700 phacoemulsification system, which is a revolution in cataract surgery, said Zeiss’ Ben Hegarty.

New to the phaco space, Zeiss went back to basics when developing the Quatera 700, he said, focusing the research team’s efforts on stability to maintain volume within the eye, independent of any other action or setting. The result was the patented Quattro pump, which Zeiss calls “a paradigm shift” in phacoemulsification fluid dynamics. “This new technology allows a synchronised infusion and aspiration change in real time. It actively compensates for incision leakage, maintaining an extremely stable chamber when occlusion is detected… virtually eliminating post-occlusion surge with intraocular pressure recovery in about 200ms, regardless of aspiration settings and independent of intraocular pressure levels.”

The Quatera 700 allows surgeons to completely change their mindset when approaching their cataract patients, said Hegarty. “They can stop thinking about the numbers and start thinking about how to approach the cataract. The Quatera is not just an evolution, it's a genuine revolution.”
