A Spanish study that compared different designs of toric silicone-hydrogel contact lenses (CLs) has shown significant variations in performance.
Led by Ángel Sánchez García, University of Santiago de Compostela researchers reported that Air Optix Aqua for astigmatism CLs performed with the lowest degree of misorientation and vertical misalignment, while Coopervision Biofinity Toric CLs offered the lowest horizontal misalignment and fastest recovery time.
Other CLs tested on astigmatic patients were Acuvue Vita for astigmatism and My’Ennovy Saphir RX. While researchers noted that lenses with a better fit demonstrated better visual performance, overall, the design of Air Optix Aqua outperformed the other lenses in terms of minimising rotation and vertical misalignment. The peri-ballast and thickness profile of the Biofinity Toric, meanwhile, improved patients’ rotational recovery and horizontal misalignment, they said.
