The near 360-degree vision of a dragonfly is providing inspiration for scientists developing artificial vision systems.
After six years spent analysing dragonfly vision, Dr Russell Brinkworth and his team at the University of South Australia are replicating a dragonfly’s visual algorithms in a computer model to use in a range of applications, such as to improve security camera footage or facial recognition. Other uses could include spotting drones in complicated environments, improving driverless cars and monitoring wildlife in densely camouflaged areas.
