Dual-action MIGS reaches NZ

Medix21 is bringing New World Medical’s Streamline Surgical System, a novel dual-action device to manage intraocular hypertension and the progression of open angle glaucoma, to New Zealand.

The device is designed to create precise goniotomies in the trabecular meshwork and deliver small amounts of viscoelastic around Schlemm’s canal in one unified step, said Medix21’s Camille Furnandiz. “It is exciting to be the third country in the world to bring this technology to market after a successful launch in the US in 2022 and in Japan earlier this year.”

New World Medical is also behind the Kahook Dual Blade, and the Streamline Surgical System can be used as a primary intervention on any open-angle glaucoma patient where another minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) device would be used, said Furnandiz. “That includes when other glaucoma interventions have failed, as it creates new goniotomies and the viscoelastic flushes around existing MIGS implants.”

Several studies have confirmed the safety and efficacy of the Streamline Surgical System, she said. One retrospective analysis, presented at ARVO 2024, found its use, combined with phacoemulsification, “safely and effectively reduced both IOP and dependence on IOP-lowering medications in eyes with mild to severe primary open-angle glaucoma extraction through the first 12 months of follow-up”.

The implant-free, single-use device features intuitive ClickPulse technology and can be used as a standalone procedure or combined with other ocular surgeries, including cataract surgery, said New World Medical. “The system is specifically designed to facilitate the creation of a series of precise incisions in the trabecular meshwork with the use of ClickPulse technology. The surgeon can simultaneously incise the trabecular meshwork and deliver precise volumes of viscoelastic fluid (up to eight applications) into several clock hours of the canal of Schlemm in one unified step,” it said

Furnandiz confirmed Medix21 has applied for Southern Cross Health Society funding.
