Free training for optical assistants

The Australian College of Optical Dispensing (ACOD) is offering free online training for new optical assistants to provide an introduction to optical dispensing.

“Spectacle and contact lenses have never been more complicated, yet many optical assistants are working without basic training potentially leading to dissatisfied patients and lost sales opportunities,” said ACOD director James Gibbins. “ACOD’s view is that optical assistants are on a learning pathway and these video tutorials provide an accessible and simple way to embark on a learning journey towards the Certificate IV in Optical Dispensing.”

Gibbins said ACOD was thrilled to be able to launch this online training tool, especially during this challenging time as we battle the coronavirus pandemic. “The videos are specifically designed for brand new employees, for them to use a potential quiet moment to upskill.”

ACOD’s 28 optical assistant tutorials cover a wide range of dispensing areas including frames, lenses, measurements, practical skills and light theory. Each tutorial is followed by multiple-choice questions with a pass earning an ACOD certificate.
