Heidelberg Engineering has extended its partnership with international sight-saving charity Orbis to help improve eye health services in underserved areas by funding crucial training for eyecare professionals (ECPs) and supporting Orbis’s telemedicine and e-learning platform, Cybersight.
In 2024, the partnership enabled four live webinars focusing on how OCT can enhance the diagnosis, management and treatment of a range of ophthalmic conditions. The sessions were viewed more than 2,050 times by ECPs from low- and middle-income countries, including conflict-affected areas such as Afghanistan, Somalia and Ukraine. Further webinars will be released this year, with details published on Cybersight’s website, said the organisations in a joint statement.
Heidelberg’s support also allowed Orbis to complete its research project into retinoblastoma, which affects 9,000 children annually. Published in JCO Global Oncology, the study found telemedicine significantly improved care and survival rates for children with retinoblastoma, while virtual mentorship enhanced diagnosis, disease classification and treatment outcomes.
