Having completed New Zealand's 3,026km Te Araroa Trail in 2023 to raise funds for his charity Eye Care for Africa, Hawke’s Bay optometrist Niall McCormack is at it again. This time, he is walking the length of the UK to raise more funds for Eye Care for Africa and Glaucoma New Zealand (GNZ).
“When I walked Te Araroa, the goal was to build a clinic in Shinyanga, Tanzania. Now that’s accomplished, I need to equip it! This time, I’m happy to also support Glaucoma NZ too,” McCormack said, adding he’s aiming to complete the almost 1,900km walk in 10 weeks.
McCormack volunteers his time every month to GNZ’s Taradale Glaucoma Peer Group, providing knowledge and reassurance to people living with glaucoma. “We’re so grateful to Niall – not just for the distance he’s walking, but for the impact he’s making,” said Sandy McGregor, GNZ fundraising manager.
McCormack started his walk from the UK’s southernmost point, Lizard Point in Western Cornwall. From here, he will head north, covering more than 1,900km, to finish at Scotland's John o' Groats.
