Focusing on imaging the anterior eye, Corneal Lens Corporation’s (CLC’s) Graeme Curtis had a busy day at CCLS introducing the VisuScience smartphone imaging adaptor, QuikVue Plus VPA-200.

The QuikVue Plus offers 10x magnification making it an ideal tool for imaging and recording for optometrists, GPs and veterinarians, among others, said Curtis, adding the optical lens ensures clear anterior images suitable for primary care examination and telemedicine. “Portable and available at an affordable price point, it’s a great option for optometrists and optometry students alike. Feedback from overseas users has highlighted that QuikVue is especially useful in taking photos of children and older patients who are perhaps less cooperative,” he said.

Equipped with two levels of white illumination to meet different brightness demands during an eye examination, QuikVue Plus also offers blue illumination to capture fluorescein images to aid contact lens fitting and diagnosis of corneal staining. The device also comes with a fold-out yellow filter, making it easy for clinicians to capture enhanced fluorescein images with cobalt blue illumination, said Curtis, which is especially useful in lens fitting, cornea ulcer imaging and for examining tear film break-up time.

Weighing in at just 59g, QuikVue Plus can attach to most smartphones, said Curtis. It’s powered by a mini lithium-ion rechargeable battery which, if fully charged, lasts for about five hours and can be recharged in 1.5 hours. It works with a smartphone’s camera and VisuScience’s VisuDoc ophthalmic case management app, which is available from the App Store and Google Play, said Curtis.
