Stars and their eyes… Jan Miskovic

Of all the hobbies most suited to an extreme high-myope, photography wouldn’t be most people’s first thought. But not only is Jan Miskovic a passionate lensman, he’s also the world’s highest recorded myope, at -108D.

As well as taking shots from his travels around his home country and Poland, with the help of custom Essilor lenses, the 67-year-old Miskovic also flies model aircraft. But the Slovak’s myopia, advancing at 4-5D per year, isn’t his only vision issue. As a child, he also developed amblyopia, astigmatism, strabismus and keratoconus. “These problems became more severe and advanced more rapidly following a racing accident in a hydroplane (a cross between a motorcycle and a powerboat designed for offshore racing), which caused severe injuries to both eyes, not to mention the side effects of the antibiotics I was forced to take, which also contributed to my declining vision,” Miskovic told optometry website ODs on FB.
