Women in Vision opens to optoms

July 15, 2024

Building on the success of its inaugural Women in Vision conference, organisers are extending the invite beyond female ophthalmologists to include women in optometry and vision science to join them for their second event, to be held from 28-30 November at the Heritage Hotel in Queenstown.

A conference dedicated to women in vision care provides a space for addressing unique challenges and fostering an inclusive and supportive community, said co-founder Professor Helen Danesh-Meyer. “Women often face distinct obstacles in their professional journeys, such as gender bias and balancing family responsibilities with career advancement. This conference provides a safe and empowering space to discuss these issues openly, share experiences and develop strategies for overcoming barriers. By focusing on the specific needs and perspectives of women, we can enhance their professional growth, resilience and leadership capabilities, ultimately contributing to a more diverse and equitable field of vision care.”

Themed ‘Visionary Women: Navigation Mastery’, this year’s conference focuses on pathways to financial independence, nurturing resilience and balancing family and work commitments. Keynote speakers include Professor Erin Shriver, chair of Women in Ophthalmology Iowa (US); Renata Watene, optometrist owner of Occhiali Optometrists and teaching fellow at the School of Optometry and Vision Science, University of Auckland; Emma Wehipeihana, award-winning journalist, broadcaster and political commentator; and Brooke Roberts, Sharesies co-founder and director.

“By fostering open discussions and sharing experiences, we aim to empower women in vision care to navigate the distinct obstacles they face in their professional journeys effectively,” said Prof Danesh-Meyer. “The event also offers a unique opportunity for participants to connect, build networks and support each other, enhancing their ability to thrive both professionally and personally.”
