Professor Keith Martin, the new head of the Centre for Eye Research Australia (CERA) and keynote speaker for this year’s RANZCO NZ meeting, has been named the top emerging leader, celebrating movers and shakers influencing the world of ophthalmology. He joins four other category winners in a list of 50 named in The Ophthalmologist’s Power List 2019.

This year’s much Power List saw a record 2,000 nominations across the five categories, said The Ophthalmologist. “The diversity of the categories – and the huge influx of votes – have brought in many new names. In fact, half of this year’s Power Listers have not been featured before.” The percentage of women making this year’s list also jumped from 13% to 26%.

Previously professor of ophthalmology at the University of Cambridge, Prof Keith Martin was appointed CERA managing director in September last year. A glaucoma specialist, known for his ground-breaking research into gene and stem cell therapy, he is also head of ophthalmology at Melbourne University and president of the World Glaucoma Association.

Others named in the Power List include Professor David Huang, co-inventor of optical coherence tomography (OCT); Drs Sanduk Ruit and Geoffrey Tabin, founding co-chairs of the Himalayan Cataract Project; Professor David (Ted) Garway-Heath from Moorfields Eye Hospital and UCL Institute of Ophthalmology, in the mentor category; and Professor Boris Malyugin from Moscow, in the pioneering surgeon category.
