Hoya Vision Care has launched a Miyosmart sun range of photochromic or polarised lenses to provide sun protection while slowing myopia progression in children.

Miyosmart Chameleon (photochromic) and Miyosmart Sunbird (polarised) lenses both use the Defocus Incorporated Multiple Segments (DIMS) technology of the company’s clear lenses, shown to slow myopia progression by 60% in children aged 8-13 years, said Frederiek Ysebaert, managing director of Hoya’s paediatric care business. “With the launch of Miyosmart sun spectacle lenses… we can enable children across the world to spend more time outdoors, while protecting their eyes from intense sunlight, maximising the benefits of DIMS technology on myopia progression.”

The launch coincides with Hoya’s ‘Protect how they see the world’ promotion, a global campaign to raise awareness of the importance of outdoor time and sun protection for children’s eyesight. “As the majority of lifetime sun exposure occurs under the age of 21, it is necessary to prevent long-term eye damage to children’s eyes with effective and reliable sun protection,” said the company. “This is particularly important for myopic children using atropine eyedrops for myopia management, and those that are light-sensitive.”
