Ocula expands, crossing the Cook Strait

Gates Eyewear in Remuera is now owned by Wanaka-based Ocula, taking the growing independent optometry group to a total of six practices and signalling its entry into the North Island and the Auckland market for the first time.

Ocula owner and director Danielle Winstone said the North Island has been on the group’s radar for some time. “We've been waiting for the right opportunity. Gates Eyewear has a strong reputation for providing high-quality eyecare and eyewear, offers an attractive location and a strong team that performs well. Having Gates Eyewear align so well with Ocula's values makes this a wonderful fit for us.”

Gates Eyewear, like Christchurch’s Groovy Glasses and Invercargill’s Lobb Optical, will continue to operate under its own brand, she said. “The strong brands we have acquired are of immense value and our strategy has been adapted to serve multiple brands. We intend to maintain modest growth and focus on high-quality acquisitions in strategic locations. This way, we believe we can maintain the essence of being independent optometry practices.”

While Auckland is a long way north, Winstone said it was as straightforward as an acquisition closer to home. “Covid, as well as bringing on Lobb Optical and Groovy Glasses - different brands in different locations, all while I had two babies in quick succession, forced us to streamline our operations to be more agile. All of these factors helped us shape a business with the right team, systems and process.”

Former Gates owners Lee Pittard and Angela Garner will stay on for at least a few years to help with the transition of the business, as will original owner and optometrist Jeremy Wong and the dispensing team, said Winstone. “We are thrilled that all the key team members at Gates Eyewear are joining us in this next chapter of the practice.”

Further acquisitions are on the radar, confirmed Winstone, adding Ocula has identified key North Island hubs, including Auckland, suited for expansion, while continuing to seek opportunities in the South Island.
