Dunedin eye surgeon Dr Deepak Gupta has been censured by the Ministry of Health (MoH) for seeing patients while unvaccinated.

An MoH announcement in February said Dr Gupta was issued a $4,000 infringement notice for breaching clause 7 of the Covid-19 Public Health Response (vaccination) Order 2021, following complaints investigated by the Ministry. “Health practitioners, including medical doctors, can only offer in person health services if they are vaccinated for Covid-19 in accordance with the Order.”

At the time of the offence, Dr Gupta was registered as a medical practitioner with the Medical Council of New Zealand, said the Ministry.

A graduate from Manchester Medical School in the UK, Dr Gupta previously worked in the ophthalmology department of Dunedin Hospital and in private practice at his Penuel Eye Clinic in Meridian Mall in Dunedin’s George Street, specialising in oculoplastics. He voluntarily cancelled his registration as a medical practitioner on 25 January 2022, making him unable to practise medicine in New Zealand.
