Special Olympics Lions Club International Opening Eyes (SOLCIOE) is seeking passionate optometrists, dispensing opticians and optical assistants to volunteer for the Special Olympics Opening Eyes Vision Programme, part of the National Summer Games taking place in Christchurch, 10–14 December 2025.
“We’re relying on the generosity and goodwill of our community to help recruit clinical volunteers. Whether you can give a day or the full event, your time will make a meaningful difference,” said Mimi Wong, clinical co-director of SOLCIOE.
Volunteering at the Opening Eyes programme is an experience you will never forget, said Yvonne Shepherd, SOLCIOE co-director. “Providing vision care for athletes with an intellectual disability makes a real difference in their sport and daily lives. For many, this is care they wouldn't otherwise be able to access or afford. At the same time, you have an opportunity to improve your clinical skills while being part of a supportive team. It is challenging but rewarding work – the athletes often show their gratitude with the pure joy on their faces!”
All athletes will receive free prescription eyewear or plano sunglasses/sports goggles of their choosing, courtesy of Essilor and Safilo.
Training is provided. Limited spots available. Register your interest here.
