A study of Allergan’s Xen45 minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) implant concluded it was safe and effective in primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) eyes with high myopia.

The multicentre Italian study, led by Professor Antonio Fea from the University of Turin, included 31 eyes with a refractive error higher than -6D and an axial length ≥26mm. Following implantation of the XenN45 gel stent researchers reported overall preoperative mean intraocular pressure was significantly lowered from 23.5mmHg to 13.0mmHg at the last follow-up visit. The number of ocular hypotensive medications was also significantly reduced from 3.0±1.1 preoperative drugs to 0.6±1.0 drugs at the last follow-up visit.

Researchers noted that needling procedure was performed in 39.3% of eyes and hypotony was observed in 28.6% of eyes during the first postoperative day and remained for one week.
