The World Council of Optometry (WCO) has launched a new resource aimed at harmonising the optometry profession and enhancing optometric education globally.

The Competency Framework for Optometry initiative aims to define the essential optometry competencies required of optometry graduates to engage effectively in the international eyecare agenda, marking a significant milestone in advancing eyecare, said Dr Yazan Gammoh, WCO education committee chair.

The framework’s five domains – refractive error, visual function assessment, ocular health and diseases, public health and professional practice – are designed to establish a minimum level of professional identity. They also align with the WHO Eye Care Competencies Framework, further reinforcing their global relevance, said Dr Gammoh.
