The Chatham Island Hospital and Health Centre originally opened in 1927, with the Sisters of Mercy stepping in to help with a lack of staff in 1947. Since 1999 it has been operated by Canterbury District Health Board and staffed by a locum doctor and three resident nurses, plus locum and specialty nurses from time to time.
