CL prescribing – survey out now

New Zealand eyecare practitioners who are looking to make an impact on future contact lens (CL) prescribing trends can now participate in the 2025 international CL prescribing survey.

Strongly advocating for New Zealand participation is Jagrut Lallu, founder of the New Zealand Eye Research Centre. The global survey supports the translation of research into clinical practice and ultimately influences prescribing trends, he said. “It is our belief that New Zealand practitioners are ahead of the curve and the data will go a long way to supporting this view. When published, the data can help us communicate our approach to CL prescribing and demonstrate what we are doing differently, compared to other countries.”

Collating information about 10 CL fits, the survey is open to all CL-prescribing optometrists and ophthalmologists and covers general information about the patient and prescriber, CL data, lens design, modality, replacement frequency and care system.

Taking the New Zealand reins from Wanda Lam, professional teaching fellow at the University of Auckland, Lallu said the project is coordinated by a group of optometry, ophthalmology and industry experts who manage the collection of data in their own regions. “Everyone involved is donating their time and expertise. Where there are costs, providers, such as NZ Optics, have kindly offered these at or below cost or at lower-than-charity rates and I am currently covering these personally until we can find a sponsor to help support us.”

The data will be processed by a team of researchers at the University of Manchester and will be widely reported in articles and at conferences.
