A new implantable collamer lens (ICL) designed for presbyopic patients who wish to retain their natural lens is entering the New Zealand market for certified users.
Device Technologies showcased the EVO Viva at RANZCO NZ. Developed by STAAR Surgical, EVO Viva is a new presbyopia-focused evolution of the ICL platform. The lens combines myopia correction with an extended depth-of-focus optic designed to improve distance, intermediate and functional near vision.
Device Technologies’ product specialist - ophthalmics Diego Sonderegger said the technology offers an alternative for highly myopic patients who develop presbyopia but may be reluctant to undergo refractive lens exchange because of the associated risks. "Particularly for highly myopic patients, this gives another option when presbyopia starts to develop," he said.
Unlike refractive lens exchange, EVO Viva leaves the eye's natural crystalline lens in place. The implant is positioned behind the iris and in front of the natural lens and, unlike laser refractive surgery, does not alter the cornea.
Device Technologies also highlighted ICL Guru designed to support ICL implantation. The AI-assisted planning system is used in conjunction with Sonomed ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM). The platform uses detailed anatomical measurements to predict post-operative vault and recommend optimal lens sizing.
