Family, mentors, colleagues and friends gathered at a wonderful evening reception hosted by Eye Institute in early June to celebrate Professor Dame Helen Danesh-Meyer’s damehood bestowed in the New Year Honours.
There wasn’t a dry eye in the room when Prof Dame Danesh-Meyer gave her thank you speech, including a special mention of her beloved late mother, Mahtaban Danesh, who herself was a pioneer and one of the first women doctors in Iran.

Prof Dame Danesh-Meyer joked that a lot hasn’t changed since becoming a Dame – her daughters still don’t do what she tells them and her dog continues to rule the roost. However, her perception among the public has changed, with many now seeming to think she has all-encompassing superpowers, with requests for everything from dispute resolution to fixing the bus lanes in Remuera coming her way.
