The University of Auckland has appointed two new associate professors: Dr James McKelvie, senior lecturer with the Department of Ophthalmology, and Dr Julie Lim, senior lecturer with the department of medical science and senior research fellow with the department of physiology.
Dr McKelvie is a consultant ophthalmologist with Te Whatu Ora, Waikato region, and the Hamilton Eye Clinic. He has sub-specialty fellowship training in cornea and anterior segment from New Zealand and the UK, is a health-tech entrepreneur and CEO of eye health infomatics company CatTrax. Research plays a critical role in advancing clinical medicine, developing new treatment modalities and improving patient outcomes, he said. “I’m very happy that the University of Auckland has acknowledged my academic contribution with a promotion to associate professor. I have been very fortunate to have the opportunity to incorporate research into my career and to work with many talented and hardworking academics, clinicians and students. In particular, I would like to thank Professors Charles McGhee and Helen Danesh-Meyer for their ongoing support and encouragement.”
Dr Lim is an award-winning vision scientist at the Molecular Vision Laboratory, where she studies the mechanisms involved in cataract formation. She leads a research group investigating the contribution of oxidative stress to various age-related eye diseases affecting the lens, retina and cornea.
