Breakers captain Thomas Abercrombie had surgery to repair a torn retina, the result of an unfortunate eye poke in a pre-season game against the Brisbane Bullets in Darwin. To help with recovery, Abercrombie had an air bubble inserted into his eye. “At the moment it’s taking up about 50% of my vision and it sort of reflects everything and gives me a bit of a headache but that will slowly shrink over the coming weeks,” he told Radio NZ. “Theoretically, I could go and play right now but I just can’t see anything. Unfortunately, there’s nothing I can do to take it out or hurry it up; it just sits there as my little friend in my eye.”
Abercrombie said he will miss six away games as he’s not allowed to fly for seven weeks post-surgery. Now in his 14th season for the Breakers, the 35-year-old forward holds the club's record for most appearances, most points and three-pointers.
