Starting this month, the Australian College of Optometry’s (ACO’s) new Certificate in Advanced Ocular Therapeutics is open for enrolment for optometrists seeking to boost their pharmacology knowledge.
Designed to build confidence in managing increasingly complex therapeutic care, the course develops the advanced pharmacology, prescribing considerations and clinical decision-making skills required to support the broader scope of therapeutic eyecare available to optometrists in Aotearoa New Zealand, said organisers.
The course explores the science underpinning oral medicines and their role in ocular disease management, developing a deeper understanding of pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, drug classes, adverse drug reactions, ocular side effects of commonly prescribed medications, diabetes pharmacology and renal, hepatic and cardiovascular pharmacology.
A key aspect of the programme is ‘Managing ocular side effects of pharmaceuticals’, presented by ACO optometrist and researcher Dr Suhyun Kweon, which explores the identification and management of medication-related ocular complications, their significance and developing appropriate management strategies through practical, case-based learning. The session reinforces the importance of considering both the therapeutic benefits and potential ocular consequences of systemic medicines when making clinical decisions, ACO said.
“Real-world, case-based learning forms the foundation of this course, supported by a team-based learning approach with experienced facilitators and peers to ensure participants are prepared to apply new knowledge to everyday clinical practice,” ACO said, adding a short clinical placement observing a healthcare practitioner also serves to provide valuable experience while strengthening relationships across healthcare.
