Titan Optical boosts portfolio

Titan Optical is the new New Zealand agent for Quantel Medical, distributing Quantel’s full suite of retinal lasers, ultrasound products and dry eye product ranges.

Following Quantel’s parent company Lumibird Group’s purchase of Australia’s Ellex’s laser and ultrasound business in late 2019, giving the company its own sales force in Australia, it made sense for them to appoint a sole agent for New Zealand, said Titan’s founder and director Campbell Gordon. “It was a simple decision and all very amicable. Quantel just needed an experienced, dedicated sales and distribution resource here.”

Gordon said he’s excited to work with Quantel, a brand he knows well and which invests heavily in research and development. “Quantel put a lot of research into which wavelength it wanted to use for its yellow pattern laser, Easyret 577nm, to maximise its efficacy.” The cavity is also warranted for five years, which is unique, said Gordon. “And as far as I know, it is the only company in the world still manufacturing photodynamic therapy (PDT) lasers.”

Other new agency wins for Titan include Norlase lasers, MDT tables and chairs and the Frey SL-100 slit lamp and SL-200 imaging module. “Frey’s slit lamp is very nifty and affordable, a welcome addition to a reasonably saturated market and with a new approach to how digital slit lamps look and work,” said Gordon. “It doesn’t require cables to connect to the network and comes with free viewing software, available to use on any device, including smartphones and tablets.”

Danish company Norlase’s ultra-portable lasers, due to arrive in the country soon, will be a game changer, according to Gordon. “Norlase’s Leaf laser is ultra-portable, requires minimal set-up time and physical space, and you can mount it on any slit lamp. Norlase’s Lion is a next-generation laser indirect ophthalmoscope that is lightweight, portable and easy to transport. The high-capacity battery in the footswitch provides days of use between charges. So there’s no need to find a power outlet – just bring the Lion to your patient and start treating,” he said.
