A fitting year for optometrists, 2020 promises to be an exciting year for the New Zealand Optometry Student Society (NZOSS). We now enter our eighth year of providing support for New Zealand optometry students, introducing them to the professional optometry world through our many sponsors and seminars.
While most University of Auckland optometry students are still on break before semester starts, the new NZOSS committee is busy ensuring that 2020 is one of the biggest and engaging years yet! This year the society is led by myself, as new president, alongside vice president, William Tang. The 2020 committee is comprised of 11 optometry students: Coco Cui, Jasmine Feng, Darren Lam, Rishi Khattar, Ricky Xue, Hayden Lee, Aidan Quinlan, Greg Park and Jeena Kim.
A mix of new and previous events are planned, with the first event occurring just before the new semester begins. The highly anticipated optometry camp, held just outside Auckland, is the perfect opportunity for catching up after a long summer holiday. It is also a chance for the fresh faces of optometry - the new Part IIs - to meet the rest of the optometry cohort.
Following their first week back at university, students will be welcomed with the annual orientation BBQ, which gives everyone some downtime after their first taste of lectures with an afternoon of sausage sizzles, hash browns and drinks.
Other events planned this year are Round the Bays - the most athletic event of the year, the return of cocktail party with attendance from our sponsors giving students an opportunity to meet and network with people they will likely interact with in the future, our pub quiz with the top prize being tickets to the most glamourous event of the year, The Eyeball!
