After more than a decade without the backing of an active association, Australian dispensing opticians can now join the newly formed Optical Dispensers Australia (ODA), a member-based, professional network for the industry.
Initiated by Australasian College of Optical Dispensing (ACOD) directors James Gibbins and Chedy Kalach together with senior lecturer April Petrusma (now the new ODA CEO), the ACOD-independent association was founded with the primary objective of transforming the industry and enabling the profession to meet its full potential.
“Optical dispensing in Australia is not the same as it was 10, or even five years ago. We have recently seen a huge influx of new practices opening across the country, both corporate and independent, as well as immense changes to the delivery of education in the sector,” said Petrusma. Government funding to encourage upskilling and traineeships in Australia has further contributed to the growing number of professionals choosing to undertake the Certificate IV in Optical Dispensing course, she said. “We are about to see the largest number of newly qualified optical dispensers in the country since deregulation occurred in 2009. The industry is evolving as we speak and it only seems fitting that the professional support and representation grows with it.”
Donald Crichton, vice president of the International Opticians Association (IOA) and a former president of the Association of Dispensing Opticians of New Zealand (ADONZ), said the IOA is proud to support this new venture. “It is a welcome addition to the optical landscape in Australia and a great opportunity for optical dispensers to join a nationwide professional organisation. I'm looking forward to seeing the delivery of educational lectures and promotion of the role within the industry.”
ADONZ also welcomed the formation of a professional association for dispensing opticians in Australia. “The value of a professional body to unite, represent, encourage and educate dispensers cannot be overstated,” said ADONZ president Angela Mitchell. “Our association is celebrating 70 years this year and we know our presence in the industry has strengthened the professionalism of our members and their relationship with colleagues. This is what we hope will happen in the future for our Australian friends.”
