A US study has found AMD patients are more likely to develop glaucoma or ocular hypertension (OHT) when treated with anti-VEGF injections.
The study, published in Clinical Ophthalmology, focused on 1055 patients without prior glaucoma or OHT who received anti-VEGF injections between 2005 and 2012 at the Wheaton Eye Clinic, Illinois. Forty-two patients developed unilateral glaucoma or sustained OHT, including 40 in the injected eye only, reported study lead Dr Jeremy Wingard. “Our results show a significant risk for glaucoma or OHT development in patients undergoing repeated treatments with intravitreal anti-VEGF injections, establishing the first reliable connection between disease development and a period of high-frequency injections.”
