An independent clinical study confirmed EssilorLuxottica’s ClickCheck – an award-winning portable, low-cost and easy-to-use refractive device – has the capacity to enhance the efficiency of primary vision screening services, especially in underserved communities in low-resource settings.
The study was conducted by Lions Aravind Institute of Community Ophthalmology (LAICO), a wing of Aravind Eye Care System, over six months in 2020 and included 1,100 patients. It found that ClickCheck demonstrated high reliability and accuracy in detecting spherical power, resulting in accurate, prompt prescriptions, while providing a starting point for subjective refraction. Authors noted that improvements are needed to accurately assess ClickCheck’s cylindrical power.
Professor Kovin Naidoo, global head for advocacy and partnerships, OneSight EssilorLuxottica Foundation, explained that although major strides have been made in creating programmes to address uncorrected refractive errors – especially in developing countries where poor vision hampers learning, driving and living productively and safely – the lack of human resources limits the ability to address demand. “In underserved environments where an autorefractor is unavailable or unaffordable, the ClickCheck allows the limited number of clinicians to serve more patients by providing an affordable, reliable starting point for the refraction process and reducing overall examination time per patient.”
The study was published by PLOS ONE.
