A Chinese study found spectacle lenses with highly aspherical lenslets (HAL) reduced or abolished macular choroidal thinning in myopic children, compared to those wearing slightly aspherical lenslets (SAL) or single vision spectacle lenses (SVL).
Led by Yingying Huang, Wenzhou Medical University-Essilor International Research Center, researchers completed the two-year, double-masked, randomised trial with 154 children aged 8-13 years with myopia between −0.75D and −4.75D, astigmatism of 1.50D or less, and anisometropia of 1.00D or less. Participants were randomly assigned in a 1:1:1 ratio to receive HAL, SAL or single SVL and their subfoveal, parafoveal and perifoveal macular choroidal thicknesses (ChT) were evaluated every six months.
Researchers found subjects’ ChT decreased after two years of myopia progression with SVL, but wearing spectacle lenses with aspherical lenslets reduced or abolished ChT thinning, with HAL having a more pronounced effect.
