RANZCO’s first female president and three “outstanding” eyecare professionals were honoured in the 2021 Queen’s birthday honours list, recognising a total of 1,190 Australians.
Associate Professor Heather Mack, University of Melbourne, led RANZCO between 2018 and 2020 and was made a Member in the General Division (AM) for her significant service to ophthalmology, particularly to professional colleges.
New South Wales ophthalmologist Dr Michael Newman was awarded a Medal in the General Division (OAM) for his contributions to ophthalmology, as well as South Australian optometrist Associate Professor Anthony Phillips (AM) and New South Wales’ Shayne Brown (AM) for her service to orthoptics.
Announcing the list, Governor-General of Australia David Hurley said he was pleased this year’s list included the highest proportion of women (44%) ever recognised through the General Division of the Order of Australia.
