NBA player Andre Drummond encountered a pre-game drama ahead of this season’s Detroit Pistons game against the Dallas Mavericks because of significant eye swelling caused by eating avocado.
Drummond showed up at a media event the day before the game in Mexico City wearing sunglasses to protect his eyes. Aware of his allergy to avocados, he inadvertently consumed a dish containing guacamole at a Mexican restaurant. The basketball player blames the incident on the waiter who repeatedly reassured Drummond the ceviche dish he ordered was avocado free, despite it being green in colour. "I started devouring it and I get to almost the bottom of the plate when I see a big strip of avocado in there. Three or four minutes later, my throat starts to close, everything starts to itch, and my eyes start watering," Drummond told the Detroit Times.
The NBA centre said the reaction was the worst he's ever had. He recovered sufficiently in time to play the game, though, and put up a double-double (a team-high 23 points and 15 rebounds).
