Auckland University’s School of Optometry and Vision Science (SOVS) hosted a large audience for Dr Art Epstein’s alternative take on dry eye, garnered over many years of practice in one of the driest places on earth, Phoenix, Arizona.
Fresh from talking at the 2019 CCLS meeting, Dr Epstein walked the audience through the clinical foundation of “dry eye” - which he said he prefers to see used in quote marks - through patient identification, diagnosis and communication to practice flow. He also discussed treatments, including a frank appraisal on the efficacy of current technologies, and stressed the importance of an empathetic and patient-centric approach. For current and future practitioners to be successful in treating dry eye, it’s absolutely imperative the patient is on board, he said. “The patient is the most sensitive instrument in your office.”
The event was sponsored by Johnson & Johnson Vision (Surgical).
