With many humbling and worthy nominations to choose from, three New Zealand lockdown heroes stood out for their compassion, tireless work and can-do attitude in our Maui Jim Nominate a Hero promotion.
Jill Haywood
Christchurch nurse Jill Haywood tirelessly looked after many patients from the Rosewood Rest Home cluster at Burwood Hospital during the pandemic.
“She was by their side, comforting some of them as they passed away,” said Rangiora Eyecare’s Anthony Galbraith, explaining Jill had come to the practice as her PPE face shield rubbed against her glasses and had damaged her lenses.
Assuring Rangiora staff she’d been isolated and tested clear, she was very humble and on the verge of tears when she came in, said Galbraith. “We replaced her lenses at no charge and thanked her as a practice for all she was doing on behalf of New Zealand and she burst into tears thinking no one cared; she hadn’t watched the news. She’s an amazing humble lady. We think she’s a hero, but she said, she ‘was just doing her job’.”
