CooperVision, in partnership with Plastic Bank, announced it has stopped the equivalent of 28 million plastic bottles from polluting the ocean since introducing the first plastic-neutral contact lens a year ago. first year of its initiative to produce the first plastic-neutral contact lens.
In March 2021, CooperVision committed to funding the collection, processing and reuse of general plastic waste equal to the weight of plastic in every box of Clariti 1-day contact lenses and packaging distributed in the US. A CooperVision statement said 171 coastal communities have now earned school tuition, clean water, groceries and health insurance through their work collecting over half a million tonnes of ocean-bound plastic.
Plastic Bank arranges for collectors to receive a premium for their waste plastic, which is reborn as Social Plastic and used in products and packaging as part of a closed-loop supply chain. Plastic Bank currently operates in Haiti, Brazil, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Egypt.
