The Centre for Ocular Research and Education (CORE) has released an update exploring whether increasing use of screens affects ocular comfort and can ultimately lead to dry eye disease (DED).
“Digital screen use has markedly increased over time, further accelerated by the Covid-19 pandemic,” said CORE director Lyndon Jones, professor at the School of Optometry and Vision Science at the University of Waterloo, Canada. “We are only just beginning to understand the full impact that such intensity may have on the ocular surface of adults and children.”
The issue reviews and summarises current research to provide practical, evidence-based advice for eyecare practitioners to use with patients, including a review of possible links between DED and digital device use by Professor James Wolffsohn, head of the School of Optometry, Aston University, UK; and key findings on the dry eye-screen relationship by Dr Bridgitte Shen Lee, global ambassador for the Tear Film & Ocular Surface Society and the British Contact Lens Association.
