Coronavirus concerns have caused the postponement of the Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology 2020 Congress.
Due to be held at Xiamen International Conference & Exhibition Centre in China from 22nd to 26th April, the 60th anniversary congress has now been moved to 5th to 9th August, at the same venue.
“Safety is most certainly our top consideration,” said APAO 2020 Congress President Ke Yao, APAO CEO Clement Tham and APAO president Ningli Wang in joint statement. “We believe Xiamen in August should be safe. August is sufficiently deep into the summer, when the coronavirus outbreak will most likely have been settled. Based on the SARS (2003) and Swine flu (2009) experiences, the viruses usually become well contained or controlled when summer arrives.”
Organisers said more than 14,000 abstracts had already been submitted by mid-February. “We are confident that our APAO 2020 60th Anniversary Congress in Xiamen in August will remain immensely successful and memorable.”
