UK researchers have discovered that nomacopan drops (Akari Therapeutics) may be a potential treatment for allergic eye disease and an alternative to steroids for treating sight-threatening vernal keratoconjunctivitis in children.
Led by Dr Malihe Eskandarpour, from the University College London Institute of Ophthalmology, the research team reported that in mice with experimental allergy conjunctivitis (EAC), the disease was suppressed significantly when treated with topical nomacopan.
Nomacopan is a biologic derived from the saliva of blood-feeding ticks, which prevents release of complement C5a and inhibits leukotriene B4 (LTB4) both part of the human immune response.
