A trend for posting TikTok videos showing users microwaving then slicing hard-boiled eggs, causing them to explode, risks thermal burns to the face and eyes, reported a US ophthalmologist.
In a statement from the University of Michigan, Dr Grace Wang warned the hot steam and the hot egg, along with the force of the explosion, can impact the face and cause serious burns to the eyes. These “eggsplosions” have been well documented even before TikTok, but it’s not clear why the trend has become popular on the app, said Dr Wang. “I think a reason for doing it is partly curiosity about the sound it makes, plus it’s something you can challenge your friends to do.
“Don't try it, because it's not worth it. You can get a lot of painful injuries that could alter your face, your appearance and your vision,” she said.
Earlier this year, TikTok users were also blamed for fuelling the trend for applying menthol and peppermint lip balms to the eyelids in a bid to feel more alert, which eyecare experts warned could also lead to scarring or vision loss.
