Retinal specialist Dr Sophie Hill has joined the team at Eye Institute.
“She is fellowship-trained in medical retina and will be integral in expanding our already high-quality retinal service,” said Eye Institute’s Dr Nick Mantell. “She has already proven to be very popular with our staff and has settled in very quickly to this new environment. We really look forward to working with her.”
Dr Hill said her interest in ophthalmology was piqued during a clinical placement at St George’s medical school at the University of London. “Enthusiastic clinical educators can really bring a specialty to life and after that I was hooked. I chose to do special study modules and then my oversees elective in ophthalmology, and visiting eye units in Samoa and The Children’s Hospital Westmead in Sydney.”
Stabilising or improving a patient’s vision is incredibly rewarding, she said. “I really enjoy being able to share retinal scan results with patients to show their improvement with therapy. It really helps to enhance their understanding of their condition and motivate them during their treatment journey.”
Outside the clinic, Dr Hill said she spends most weekends tackling the maintenance of her heritage villa and garden together with her husband. “I also love the creative arts and nature. My happy place is attending an art gallery exhibition or exploring New Zealand’s diverse national parks.”
