Researchers in China have validated microsurgical skills using a grape-based training model.
Led by Professor Xiaoyan Ding, Zhongshan University, researchers assessed 83 ophthalmology residents, 42 of whom undertook a four-hour surgical skill programme using fruit models, while the remainder trained with a virtual reality (VR) modulator and silicone suture pads. Writing in the British Journal of Ophthalmology, the research team said grape-training models were equal to VR simulators and silicon suture pads for microsurgical skills training and could have advantages given their lower economic cost and easy availability.
