The Lighthouse Vision Trust, a dedicated Canterbury-based low vision support charity, has awarded two $10,000 scholarships to budding Canterbury University students Nicholas Tung and Lewis Marshall.
Established at the end of 2016, the Lighthouse Vision Trust scholarships are for one year’s full-time study of any course at the University. To be eligible, students must have visual acuity of 6/24 or worse in the best eye with correction or less than a 20 degrees visual field.
The two scholarships offered are the Lighthouse Vision Trust scholarship and the Sue Barnes Memorial Scholarship, in honour of the late Susan Barnes, who despite losing her vision to diabetic retinopathy inspired many, living life to the full and completing a master’s in political science.
The scholarship recipients use the funding to allow them to focus on their studies and reduce the need to have part time jobs, says trustee Pete Madden, Blind Foundation regional service manager. The Trust also supports the Low Vision Clinic at Burwood Hospital.
