Southern Eye Specialists

Dr Antony Bedggood has recently joined the team of surgeons at Southern Eye Specialists. Dr Bedggood, an experienced cataract and general ophthalmologist, has specialist experience in neuro-ophthalmology and strabismus management in both adults and children.

Southern Eye chair, Dr Jim Borthwick, welcomed Dr Bedggood to Southern Eye: “Antony brings another dimension to the DNA diversity of Southern Eye Specialists and we are very much looking forward to having him on board.”

The recruitment of Dr Bedggood will strengthen the delivery of specialist eye care across Southern Eye Specialists, he said, “In particular, we see significant demand for his paediatric experience and focus to further complement our existing specialist services.” As for the future, Dr Borthwick said he expects the team to continue to grow over the next 12 months with further recruitment of experienced and emerging specialist ophthalmic consultants.

Dr Antony Bedggood said he’s excited about his new role. “I look forward to working as part of a great team with skilled colleagues and I hope to make care for complex children’s eye disease more accessible. Ensuring young children from all walks of life have the best possible vision remains my goal and motivation.”

St George’s Eye Care

Dr Oliver Comyn joined the St George’s Eye Care team in April.

Originally from the UK, Dr Comyn specialises in the medical and surgical treatment of retinal diseases and is experienced in treating children. After studying medicine at Oxford University, he completed his specialist training at the prestigious Moorfields Eye Hospital in London.

Dr Comyn said he is very excited to join the team at St George’s Eye Care. “As a retinal surgeon, I’m most looking forward to expanding the types of surgery on offer here as we are now able to treat patients with retinal detachments, macular holes and epiretinal membranes as well as carrying out premium cataract surgery.” He is also keen to work collaboratively with local optometrists, he said. “Many optometry practices are becoming equipped with OCT so we want to provide education and support in interpreting these scans and are planning workshops for the local optometry community.”

Greg Brooks, chief executive of St George’s said he is very pleased to have Dr Comyn on board and this most recent recruitment is a testament to St George’s dedication to offer quality eye care at the most affordable rates. “Dr Comyn is an accomplished cataract surgeon and, with his abilities in vitreoretinal surgery, he is able to successfully operate on the most challenging of cataracts.”

Spectrum Surgical

Spectrum Surgical has appointed Merryn Card (formerly Dunsmuir) as New Zealand sales manager.

Spectrum Surgical was formedin Australia in 1995 and has been promoting high-quality surgical and diagnostic equipment to the New Zealand market for the last 10 years, said managing director Peter Grech.

Welcoming Card to the team, Grech said, “I believe with our complementary skill sets and experience and our mutual passion for the industry, we are well set up to grow the business and continue to provide technical excellence and exceptional customer service in New Zealand.”

Card has 15-plus years’ experience in the ophthalmology industry, initially establishing Critical Assist NZ in 2002 and then moving to Intermed Medical in 2012. She said she is looking forward to taking up this newly-created role and the opportunity to bring more exciting new products to the New Zealand ophthalmic market.
